THE WELL BUILDING STANDARD is an extension of the green buildings (LEED) certification and other standard-setting organizations that implement, measure, and certify building strategies that enhance human health and wellbeing in the workplace. WELL identifies 102 performance metrics, design strategies and procedures that can be implemented by owners that affect air quality, water, nourishment, lighting, fitness, comfort and mind. This project was the first-of-its-kind in Canada and first to receive WELL Gold Certification. An impressive feat, to be sure, and would not have been possible without the dedicated partnership of project stakeholders.

A true team effort from the get-go. All partners meticulously combed through all the elements of the construction, architecture, and infrastructure – identifying what needed to be assessed, tested, and monitored.

With a clear goal in mind: Achieve WELL Certification, our scope was clear and our expertise in identifying the myriad preconditions and installations needed to meet certification requirements – all with an eye to optimizing costs and safeguarding against unexpected overruns.

In the end, more than 60 WELL features were integrated into the design, including innovative lighting, water filtration, logistics, food supply and vending systems.

Before construction began, we were faced with a conundrum: The dust created as a result of construction could potentially jeopardize certification, so we had to build a specially-designed vented chamber to be used for storage and handling of materials.
